Burnt Out or Soul-Bored? How to Tell the Difference

The Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

You’re tired. You’ve tried resting. You’ve tried organizing your calendar, taking supplements, maybe even disappearing into a weekend away. But the fog is still there. The frustration, the fatigue, the quiet ache. So let’s name what this might be:

Burnout. Or soul-boredom. (And yes, they’re different.)

Burnout wears a recognizable mask. It shows up as chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog, irritability, and an inability to focus. You might notice your patience has thinned, your appetite has changed, or that basic tasks now feel monumental. This is your body’s SOS — and it’s often caused by prolonged stress, overwork, or emotional labor without adequate recovery.

But emotional burnout goes deeper than physical exhaustion. It’s the slow erosion of your inner spark. You might feel disillusioned, cynical, or numb. The passion you once had for your work or role fades into resentment or detachment. Emotional burnout is what happens when your soul gets no say.

What It Feels Like When You’re Out of Alignment

Soul-boredom, on the other hand, is sneakier. You might still have energy — technically. But you feel unfulfilled. You daydream about a different life. You might feel restless, underutilized, or like you're checking the boxes but nothing lights you up.

Misalignment often comes with guilt. "I should be grateful." You’ve worked hard to build the career, the family, the life. But something’s off. You may feel like you’re playing a role instead of living your truth.

Why Rest Alone Doesn’t Always Fix the Problem

Rest is powerful. But if you’re soul-bored, rest won’t repair the misalignment — it only makes you more aware of it. You can’t nap your way back to purpose. True restoration comes from returning to your core desires and creating space for alignment. If burnout is depletion, soul-boredom is disconnection.

This is where most people get stuck. They take a break, but the clarity doesn’t come. So they assume something’s wrong with them. But what’s really missing is a deeper reflection — the kind that asks, what am I no longer willing to abandon in myself?

Real Stories From Women Who "Should" Feel Fine (But Don’t)

One colleague was a high-level project manager, admired by peers and steadily promoted — but quietly miserable. "I kept thinking, maybe I just need to take a vacation. But every time I came back, the dread returned."

Another had left corporate life to be a full-time mom. "Everyone said I was lucky. But I missed using my voice, being creative. I started to feel invisible."

They didn’t need another productivity hack. They needed permission to question the script.

Soul-Led Questions to Ask Yourself

If you’re resonating with this, here are three questions from our free Clarity Session to explore:

What feels heavy — and when did it start feeling that way?

Where am I betraying my own truth for the comfort of others?

If no one needed anything from me tomorrow, what would I create or pursue?

Your answers won’t just clarify what’s wrong — they’ll point to what’s calling you next. Whether you’re burned out, soul-bored, or somewhere in between, the real medicine is self-honesty and courageous curiosity.

At AEM Higher, we’re not here to fix you. We’re here to help you reclaim the parts of you that got buried under "shoulds." You don’t need more hustle. You need a moment of truth — and this is it.
